The joy on the part of Councilman Eric Ulrich and his colleagues in city government was palpable on the afternoon of Friday, Oct. 12, as they officially turned the first sod on PS 256’s new state-of-the-art building on 445 Beach 135th Street, across the street from its current location.
“This is going to be a wonderful addition to the community,” said Ulrich, who applauded NYC School Construction Authority (SCA) President Lorraine Grillo for her support in the $31 million investment that will afford students access to a wider variety of school programs, with a particular focus on youngsters with special needs.
“We know there’s such a great need to serve children that are on the spectrum somewhere and require very specialized instruction and instructional activities,” imparted the city legislator when breaking down the specifics of the new edifice that will open its doors in September 2020.
State Senator Joseph Addabbo and Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato shared in Ulrich’s excitement for the project, with Addabbo mentioning how the school’s “dedicated” teachers will soon be able to truly make a difference with the resources that children really need.
PS 256 Principal Robert Lopez saw the upgraded site as being a beacon of hope for all programs and promised that his committed staff would produce “wonderful things” down the road once the new space is up and running.
Ulrich lauded the efforts of design manager Cleveland Morrison and architectural firm Di Domenico and Partners for their respective roles in laying the groundwork for the undertaking.
Grillo capped off the festivities by adding: “It’s about damn time that we in the city recognize the needs of these children and give them everything they deserve.”
